Highland Park is active in a network of churches and synagogues called the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) that provides transitional housing for homeless families. IHN is part of Foundation for the Homeless.
Being an IHN church allows us to serve others and to be good stewards of our building. During their stay with us, families spend the night in classrooms converted to bedrooms. They have showers and laundry facilities. Congregation members volunteer to provide dinner, breakfast and hospitality.
The IHN office is located in one of our buildings next door to the church. Families are paired with a caseworker who helps them find employment, childcare, housing, and other assistance. Adults have phones and Internet access. Children have a backyard with play equipment. The house includes a kitchen and common living space. In 2007, 80% of families in the IHN program graduated to secure, independent housing.
Being an IHN church allows us to respond to God’s grace by extending help to others. It also allows us to partner with other communities of faith.
We treasure these opportunities.
